Dear Fellow Survivalist;
There’s nothing new about the idea of turning a semi-automatic firearm into a fully-automatic one. As long as I’ve been shooting, I’ve seen people asking how to do it and even seen a few claiming that they’ve succeeded. Some will tell you that converting an AR-15 to full-automatic is easy, while others claim it can’t be done. The truth is that the part installation is easy; but the lower receiver has to be machined differently and if you don’t know how to do that, you’re stuck.
But now there’s a new kid on the block, when it comes to turning a semi-automatic firearm into a fully-automatic one. That’s the Glock family of firearms. I guess it’s not really surprising that people would try to do this, considering that there are so many Glocks out there and that they all function the same. From a pure efficiency viewpoint, any effort put into making Glocks fully-automatic would pay off much more than trying to do that with just about any other firearm.
The device to make the switchover is called the Glock Switch and you can find them readily online. When I looked the other day, I saw an article that claimed they were available from Amazon (they’re not), Etsy (nope) and AliExpress (they’re not there either). But according to those articles they were that easy to find just a few short weeks ago.
Apparently there are a number of people, perhaps law enforcement agencies, which are working to take down the places where you can find them; but you still can. While they are no longer available on Amazon for $24.95, I found a website selling them for $250.00. The places I have seen them are all backordered, apparently due to their popularity.
Installing the switch is simplicity itself, as it replaces the back slide plate, something that people do all the time to customize their Glocks. This one sticks out about 3/8 inch, making it possible to easily identify Glocks that have been modified.
Now, before I go any farther, let me remind you that owning one of these or installing one on your Glock is illegal, unless you have completed all the necessary paperwork with ATF and have received their approval. The prison sentence for this crime, which is a felony, can be as long as 20 years and the fine as much as $500,000. Not something I’d like to take a chance on. Besides, I don’t like full-automatic fire anyway, because you can’t shoot accurately; any fully-automatic firearm climbs to the right.
But that doesn’t mean that criminals won’t take that chance; and from the looks of things, they are. Police have already had encounters with criminals who are armed with Switch modified Glocks, meaning that the police are outgunned by the criminals. It also means that you and I are outgunned by the same criminals.
So, what do we do?
First, I wouldn’t recommend following in the footsteps of the criminals. If you ever had to use it, you’d go to jail, even if it was in self-defense. For that matter, your plea of self-defense might be thrown out of court, and you’d go to jail for both the killing and the crime of having an unregistered fully-automatic firearm.
But you may still find yourself in a situation where a criminal is armed with one. After all, they don’t care much about obeying any other law; why not break this one too?
In that case, the best possible thing to do is get down and if possible, get behind cover. At 1100 rounds per minute, a Glock equipped with this switch will empty a 30 round magazine in 2.8 seconds. From the video I’ve seen, that’s the way that criminals are shooting them. Apparently none of them have been in the Army, where they would have been taught to shoot 3 round bursts.
Most of those 30 rounds (or less, if they don’t have an extended magazine) will end up drilling holes in the air, due to the muzzle climbing. I have no idea just how much the muzzle climbs on one of these, but I have shot an M-16 on full-auto and that climbed pretty bad. A pistol would have to be worse. Hence the need to get down.
Getting down doesn’t just mean hiding though. Once you get down, draw your own pistol and get ready to react. Once those 2.8 seconds is over, they’ll be out of ammo. Even if they do have another magazine, it will take them a minimum of 2 seconds to replace it (probably considerably longer; but don’t count on it). That’s your window of opportunity. If you’re going to do anything, that’s when it’s going to have to be. You’ll need to rise up, get a sight picture and fire in those 2 seconds. If they don’t go down, but obviously aren’t reloading quickly, you might have enough time for another shot. But then, if they’re not reloading, they might not have another magazine to reload, in which case, you’ve won.
That’s about the best advice I can give you. It’s not great; but it’s what I would do. There’s no way that I would want to go up against any fully-automatic firearm, without doing whatever I could to even the battle. Allowing them the chance to waste their ammo, shooting at the sky, seems the best way to do that.
Hopefully, none of us will have to try that out. In the meantime, we can keep it in our bag of tricks; just like keeping our powder dry and our survival gear close at hand.
