[Scam Alert] Online scam victim found dead

This week’s alert is pretty terrifying.

The problem:

Nigerian scam artists are at it again (as if they ever stopped).  This one was particularly skilled at what he did.  He actually scammed poor 67 year-old Yetta Jacobs out of 80,000 over a period of 3 years.  He then convinced her to come to Nigeria to marry him, where he and his cohorts robbed and then killed her.  And if that’s not enough, he continues to call her grieving children demanding more money.

The solution:

First off, don’t make the mistake thinking that this can’t happen to you.  Thousands of people a year are scammed for millions of dollars by foreigners who play on people’s sympathies.  You are savvy enough to read this newsletter, so you’re probably savvy enough not to get caught up in these webs.  But I bet you know someone who is elderly, lonely, or just plain gullible.  Do them a favor, and email this to them RIGHT NOW.  They’ll thank you for it.  If they do not have email, just pass along these few tips:

  • Don’t trust strangers that claim they need your help, especially foreigners.
  • Never, ever wire someone you don’t know money.
  • Use credit cards whenever possible so that if you do get caught in a scam, you have recourse to get your money back.
  • Be suspicious of anyone who uses especially bad grammar or spelling as this usually indicates someone who does not speak English.
  • Verify.  If an email claims to be from a relative, call them to make sure they sent it.

Looking out for you…

Chris Peterson

PS:  Wanted to let everyone know that ordered their physical book that they were finally sent out this week!  We ran out of 3 ring binders (and had some complaints about them to be honest) so we used spiral binding that we think you’ll like.  It makes it much easier to read and to have next to your computer.  Please let us know what you think of them as its very important to us that you’re happy.

PPS: Barbara and I are going to be rolling out a more formal newsletter soon, stay tuned as we’re very excited about this and really look forward helping you even more protect you and your family.
